When it comes to kids and families, it’s probably best to be a little of both!
Let the Planner in you take charge for the next few minutes so that you and your kids can participate in the following activities happening around town. From Acting to Science, what follows are 5 options for a range of interests, ages and abilities. All of them require Pre-Registration (hence the need to be in Planner mode) and it would be a shame to miss out. Here’s the scoop:
Baseball Enthusiasts Want to take the family out to a ball game this spring? You can get a West Valley Resident Pass from Camelback Ranch - Glendale (where the Dodgers and White Sox hold their spring training) and then with that you can get discounted tickets for 2025 Spring Training games.
Available for free to anyone with a West Valley home address (yes, this includes Peoria, Surprise and El Mirage) the pass is valid for $7 Lawn or $10 Baseline Reserve or Baseline Terrace tickets for Sunday-Thursday games based on availability. Up to four (4) tickets may be redeemed per game. Tickets must be purchased in person on the day of the game with a registered pass and matching photo ID.
Lawn tickets at the regular rate range from $14-27 so this is a great deal! It’s a two step process. 1) Register to get your West Valley Resident Pass and then 2) Go to the game and get your tickets. Do Step 1 now to get the “ball” rolling.

You may already know but…. When driving to the game, skip the line of cars coming off of the 101 freeway and approach on Camelback coming in from Dysart Rd. or El Mirage Rd.
Adaptive Arts & Crafts Surprise offers an Adaptive Recreation Special Interest Class designed for participants to work on increasing fine motor skills through entertaining activities such as arts, crafts and various fun projects. Participants must be 5 years or older and parents must assist children ages 5-7. For those who are 8+, parents must remain onsite but are not required to help.
Step-by-step instruction is given and attendees leave the class with a fun piece of art and special memories to match. Participants do not have to live in Surprise in order to join in. The next session is on Thursday, Feb. 6th at 6:30 pm and there are currently spots available so don’t delay!

Budding Scientists If you have kids who are interested in nature and science, this might be right up their alley: GLOBE Observer - Clouds is a NASA project that invites families to document the clouds they see in their own communities and then upload the info so it can be a resource for scientists studying the sky and weather. Observations help scientists track changes in clouds in support of climate research. Scientists also use your data to verify NASA satellite data. And by submitting your observations, you can help students of all ages do real scientific research as part of the GLOBE Program.
To participate, just download the app, go outside and follow the prompts in the app to observe your environment. Photograph clouds, record sky observations and compare them with NASA satellite images to help scientists understand the sky from above and below. Older kids can engage independently while younger ones can get a lot out of it but would need parents to be right there involved in the process.
New and interested users are encouraged to go to SciStarter.org/NASA-GLOBE to learn more and receive step-by-step instructions. You can visit https://observer.globe.gov to learn more about GLOBE Observer and the Clouds tool. For educators, the main GLOBE Program can be found at http://www.globe.gov.
CPR Class The City of Peoria offers this class and makes it available to anyone (whether you live in Peoria or not) who is 10 years or older. What a great chance to learn a life saving skill!
Spots are limited but as I type there are 7 spots available for the class being offered at 10 am on Sat. Feb. 22nd. The cost for this non-certificate course on CPR and AED is $10 (or free, if you live in Peoria, I believe). That makes it affordable enough for several family members to take the class!
